7th Grade Language & Literature
Students read together in small groups, “Amigo Brothers,” and discussed and answered scaffold close reading questions. Then, students completed a Compare and Contrast graphic organizer, showing the differences and similarities both physical and personality, between the two main characters. 6th grade students started their historical fiction unit on the Gold Rush era and how an author like Jack London’s personal experiences can have a profound effect on their writing. 7th grade students learned about the author Piri Thomas and what Spanish Harlem was like in the late 1940’s/early 1950’s along with the importance of youth boxing to that community. 8th Grade Ind and Societies: Students are learning about propaganda and it's role in the colonies, leading up to the American Revolution! 👊🏻 Mr Bartuska's Science classes: As it turns out, Middle Schoolers (as compared to high schoolers) will sing! So today, my three 7th grade classes (3rd, 6th, and 8th Periods) are competing for the best at singing the “Food Chain Song” and the “Energy Flow Song,” both created by a teacher named Mr. Parr. Check it on Facebook! Mrs. Baker: 9 students auditioned for all state chorus this past week and 7 of them passed the first two levels and are going on to audition in round 3 for an opportunity to make it into the 2018 FL All State Choir! Mrs. Moore's 1st and 4th period classes challenged Mr. Andrews to a fraction activity!! Ask who won! :) Great week, great kids, great staff! The advanced chorus performed for the 6th grade students in honor of International Day of Peace on September 21, 2017. The chorus students are preparing for all county chorus and all state chorus auditions. The classes are working hard on establishing unity and celebrating the success of performing by each student.
In the string world, students are working hard on preparing as well on all county and all state orchestra auditions. 7th Grade Global Tech It’s a great pleasure to share with our school about how our 7th grade Global Tech is creating a Cell Phone Silencer Company. They are creating a cell phone silencer company and designing a product to hold a cell phone and muffle the sound if it rings. Each group will use a shoe box and variety of materials to make a sound proof box for their cell phone. In Emerging Tech, we have created a scenario for the 1st year students to pretend they are the owners of the research databases available to all Polk County students and they are creating Powtoons to sell the databases to all students. The 2nd year students are creating video games using the online software Sploder. The 3rd year students are continuing to create subject specific board games using the Creation Station materials and the 3D printer in the Fab Lab! Civics students have been learning about the historical figures and documents that influenced the US Constitution. We are also looking into the different forms of government that are used around the globe! CW classes: 6th Graders: reviewing basic grammar, figurative language, and word usage before they write “A Story in a Shoebox.” 7th Graders: will begin the interviewing process – be prepared to get asked a lot of questions! 8th Graders: attended a production of “Hairspray, Jr.” at Lakeland Community Theatre to help them understand the theatre. They are putting the final touches on their scripts for the theatre’s “Out of the Box” troupe for actors with special needs. The performance will take place in May, 2018. Film & Lit: began reading the play, “The Miracle Worker.” When finished, we will compare the play to the classic movie. Dear Knights,
I sincerely hope that this letter finds you well. The past week has been an incredibly difficult time for our community. Whether you were evacuated, sheltered in place, or helped loved ones in need, all of us were affected by Irma. I am proud of the stories I have seen and heard of our community helping one another. The generosity of the Lakeland community is inspiring. As I entered the building over the weekend, I was amazed to notice that it all looked the same with its warm and welcoming atmosphere you always find when you enter our school. Minor issues were addressed quickly and efficiently by our district maintenance and custodial crew. We were incredibly blessed not to have sustained any major damage. As you know, we plan on resuming classes on Tuesday, September 19th. We will recognize regular hours tomorrow and attempt to keep things as normal as possible for our students. Getting back to a routine can often be the best approach to a crisis. With that, we will allow time for students to get acclimated and to reflect in classes. I’m aware that some of our families are currently displaced to motels/apartments, staying with others or housing extra guests in need. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if we can be of help. If your child does not have their school uniform with and you need assistance, please send your child to school with what you have. We will work to get replacements/donations through our counselors and/or PTSA. If you need ANY assistance, whether it be housing issues, clothes, uniforms, food, school supplies, or emotional support....please make us aware. In addition, until October 20th ALL meals at school (breakfast and lunch) will be free for ALL students @ LCMA. Please give your child a hug from us and tell him/her that we cannot wait to see them tomorrow! Thank you all for being such an important part of our LCMA family and for staying strong. Go Gently, Brian J. Andrews |
