Hey Knights!
Thanks to the students, staff and volunteers in making the last 2 weeks a perfect blend of learning with an added bit of fun! All students have given back in some way in making Red Ribbon Week a success in providing needed awareness in making the right choices to be safe and healthy. Mrs. Bland and her students spearheaded the Pennies for Patients campaign which concluded with administration finding themselves in a "sticky" situation! Check out FB for more on that......The annual Music Department's "Walk the Wire" was a sound success as well; thanks to all the volunteers and student participation contributing to the finest music program in Polk County! Mrs. McDaniel's LA classes were busy learning some grit and resilience with their ipads and researched "How competition can help us become better people" and how "Winning and losing can be done with both grace and dignity"....resulting in an argumentative essay analyzing competition/conflict in 2 or more texts......Mrs. Tregler provided some living, literal examples of the Constitutional Amendments....think of her wearing a bear costume, and now think which amendment?? .......6th grade LA classes held their annual "Cay Day"last week, which provides an opportunity for students to empathize and actively engage in activities allowing them to experience a disability.....powerful......thanks Mrs harwell and Mrs. Narramore.......6th grade Math is applying ratio, rates, and units to become Savvy Shoppers, experiencing what its like to create a family budget.....Mrs. Campbell's Global Tech classes are using Tynker to code their own video games, ask the kids about it! Mr. Jones's Creative Writing classes are working on their monologues and they are fantastic to listen to aloud.....Mr. Jones's own monologue inspired the students to reach for the sky! Our Fab Lab is continuing to move forward under Mr Patterson's leadership.....the vinyl cutter is being tackled currently.....while more intricate 3D printing designs are being produced. In facility news....we are excited and grateful to the district for providing us with a new scoreboard for the gym.....the process is in the works now!! Dankie, Brian J. Andrews Principal Hi Knights!
Fantastic article today in The Ledger (check it out) regarding our wildly successful Hispanic Heritage Festival! Thanks to Mrs. Garcia, Castillo, Patient and Barnett for the countless hours organizing the event. We could not have done it without the amazing efforts and contributions of our LCMA PTSA! I cannot say enough about Mayor Wiggs and the City of Lakeland folks for being there and supporting us whenever we reach out to them. It was just a perfect blend of celebrating and learning for our students. I was very proud of their behavior and respect they displayed to all our participants. Even with this pomp and circumstance, we are still going strong in the learning department.....Geometry students recently completed their City Planning Projects and they were amazing, they are also reading the novel, Flatland (yes! in math class!), analyzing the classic satire and its connection to Geometry. The students are also working on a new unit on Functions, which includes a community service aspect feeding the hungry through Lighthouse Ministries.........The Environmental Symposium class fared well at the Cardboard Boat Race @ Lake Hollingsworth last Saturday and they have begun research projects regarding saving Monarchs and dangers of run off.......6th grade LA classes traveled back in time to the Gold Rush Era with activities including a historical fiction letter writing assignment.......6th grade SS classes had the students role play and board their own faluccas in Ancient Egypt traveling down the Nile River, they made several stops along the way to experience important monuments, the tour guides were better than at Disney's Jungle Cruise.......out 7th graders flew their completed Hot Air Balloons in Freedom Park.......6th graders got to exclaim the famous line "EUREAKA!" as they explored the buoyancy, mass, and density of objects and the Archimedes Principle.....8th graders are taking their business designs to the prototyope phase by using 50% recycled materials for their concept designs......Creative Writing is churning out some amazing poetry right now and I am excited to see our students go up against other schools......super stuff!! Despite it being a short week for the students, we had a lot happening on campus. Thanks to all for attending the Band Concert on Tuesday evening. Thanks to Ms. Sholine for a fun filled evening of showcasing our musicians. Thursday night's National Junior Honor Society Program was well attended and provided for a formal, pride filled evening for our 8th graders. Please mark your calendars to stop by October 15th from 12:30-2:30pm for our first inaugural Hispanic Heritage Festival. The Spanish department is working feverishly to make this a memorable event. Please stop by to show your support! In the classrooms......Geometry students had a City of Lakeland City Planner guest speaker and are working on creating their own cities. Algebra classes are finishing up their Bone Activity as well......7th Grade Science with Mr Thomas constructed Pond Water Food Webs this week and the 8th graders constructed History of the Atomic Model timelines........Mrs. Narramore's LA 7th graders served on legal debate teams in relation to the characters of Nag and Nagaina from Rudyard Kipling's Rikki Tikki Tavi......Mr Jones's Creative Writing classes rehearsed and presented their play "Swimming with Sins" and learned theatrical and dramatic terms while stretching themselves in front of their peers onstage.......Emerging Tech classes are using and creating with the app Aurasma, totally cool...............Mr Dinwiddie's classes are solving expressions with rational numbers and charting them.......Mrs. McDaniels' 7th grade LA classes are making character Wanted Posters in the form of R.A.F.T. model which encourages students to uncover their own voice and format for presenting their ideas about curriculum and content. As you know, FSA scores have been released and at this point I'm thrilled with the results. Fantastic work by our students! I am also extremely proud of our entire dedicated faculty and staff. Despite the ongoing controversy surrounding standardized testing, it inspires me to see our collective competitive drive take over and make us shine!
