Lavelle’s 8th graders have been studying an excerpt from Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. They’ve been examining how writers couch significant, meaningful detail into seemingly meaningless or arbitrary details, and the impact of such details on the point-of-view or purpose. In our next class, we’ll be looking out how Angelou uses the “caged bird” theme in one of her poems and we’ll look for the overlap/similarities concerning point-of-view and perspective.
