Dear Knight Families,
Summer is a time for our children to unwind, rest, and rejuvenate. It is also a time to ensure our children stay connected to reading without stress. In order to facilitate that end, all students will be required to complete a chosen Sunshine State Reading Book for 2016-2017. The book can either be purchased hard copy or electronic; or borrowed from the Public Library. The expectation is for your child to read the book listed for the appropriate grade level. As your child completes a chapter, your child will write their thoughts about the chapter in a journal. The journal may be online or in a notebook. This journal will be your child's' entry ticket to our annual first Friday of school celebration! We will have other activities surrounding the book upon returning the first week of school, and their first grade will be based on the students’ assigned novel. I have personally read these selections and enjoyed them tremendously! I would encourage you to read along with your child and incorporate some “book chats” over the summer. It takes a bit of time and scheduling, but it is honestly a rewarding experience for both kids and adults. Trust me on that! Please encourage your child to stretch out and set a goal to read ALL Sunshine State Books this year. Be sure to check out the LCMA Sunshine State webpage. On this page you will find links to the 2016-17 Sunshine State books and you will be able to comment on the books as you finish reading them. They are all quite engaging. LCMA will be looking to get back on top of the county Book Bowl this year!!! More information to follow on the Book Bowl Team when school begins. Andrews Principal Lawton Chiles Middle Academy 8th Grade Selection: The Worst Class Trip Ever by Dave Barry From Goodreads: In this hilarious novel, written in the voice of eighth-grader Wyatt Palmer, Dave Barry takes us on a class trip to Washington, DC. Wyatt, his best friend, Matt, and a few kids from Culver Middle School find themselves in a heap of trouble-not just with their teachers, who have long lost patience with them-but from several mysterious men they first meet on their flight to the nation's capital. In a fast-paced adventure with the monuments as a backdrop, the kids try to stay out of danger and out of the doghouse while trying to save the president from attack-or maybe not. 7th Grade Selection: The Honest Truth by Dan Gemeinhart From Goodreads: In all the ways that matter, Mark is a normal kid. He's got a dog named Beau and a best friend, Jessie. He likes to take photos and write haiku poems in his notebook. He dreams of climbing a mountain one day.But in one important way, Mark is not like other kids at all. Mark is sick. The kind of sick that means hospitals. And treatments. The kind of sick some people never get better from.So Mark runs away. He leaves home with his camera, his notebook, his dog, and a plan to reach the top of Mount Rainier--even if it's the last thing he ever does. The Honest Truth is a rare and extraordinary novel about big questions, small moments, and the incredible journey of the human spirit. 6th Grade Selection: The Summer I Saved the World in 65 Days by Michele Weber Hurwitz From Goodreads: It's summertime, and thirteen-year-old Nina Ross is feeling kind of lost. Her beloved grandma died last year; her parents work all the time; her brother's busy; and her best friend is into clothes, makeup, and boys. While Nina doesn't know what "her thing" is yet, it's definitely not shopping and makeup. And it's not boys, either. Though . . . has Eli, the boy next door, always been so cute? This summer, Nina decides to change things. She hatches a plan. There are sixty-five days of summer. Every day, she'll anonymously do one small but remarkable good thing for someone in her neighborhood, and find out: does doing good actually make a difference? Along the way, she discovers that her neighborhood, and her family, are full of surprises and secrets. In this bighearted, sweetly romantic novel, things may not turn out exactly as Nina expects. They might be better. |
