Lavelle's students are temporarily transforming themselves into architects in order to design memorials for unsung heroes or underrepresented entities in our society. Students will use the following Statement of Inquiry to dictate their design choices: Communication reflect purpose and context and can influence power or privilege. The real-life scenario students have been given concerns the movement of the Confederate monument from Munn Park. They must create a monument to someone or something that does not spark controversy, but instead, draws the community together. Students have studied various types of memorials, including film, songs, poems, and essays, and will apply their understanding of the meaning of the word "memorial" to their individual representations.
6th Grade U.S. History classes are learning about the first presidents. They are realizing that creating a new nation was not easy. Washington faced many challenges. Students will be creating a Fakebook (similar to Facebook, but not online) page for one of the first five presidents. Civics students are eager to be back in class learning about how our government functions! At this time, we are focusing on the legislative branch. There are tons of real world events happening now, and these would be a great springboard for communicating with your children! Give them a chance to share what they know! Creative Writing & Drama Welcome new 6th graders! We will begin looking at the history of writing and reviewing basic grammar/word usage/figurative language before starting our journey during the second semester. 7th Graders are working on an original end-of-the-year script for the drama club at Highlands Grove Elementary! Their theme is anti-BULLying, and are planning to use an arrogant BULL, a confused BULLdog, and a sympathetic BULL shark! So excited for this creativity to be shared with our community. 8th Graders are putting the finishing touches on their "Sister Cities International Young Authors Showcase" poems or essays. The top 10 will be submitted for judging at Harrison on January 26th. Many students are also completing their application to interview/audition at Harrison in the upcoming weeks! Next up will be original parodies. GO KNIGHTS!! Geometry students are learning about points of concurrency and their use in the world. They are preparing for the annual "gyroscope" contest using the centroid of a triangle. Algebra students have finished the "Learning for Lighthouse" community service project and are proud to have donated over 1100 canned food items. This is a school record! In their project, students predict which nutrients in food contribute most toward calories and then test their conjecture using scatterplots, trendlines and the correlation coefficient. Students are continuing their learning with linear systems of inequalities. Sixth grade science students in Mrs. Sitta's classes are transitioning from how weathering, erosion and deposition shape the surface of the land to studying the energy around us. This exciting unit will be full of labs and experiments. Link to SeaPerch website for photos George Bartuska https://www.seaperch.org/index SeaPerch Home Page www.seaperch.org Fun Underwater Robotics SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips teachers and students with the resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) in an in-school or out-of-school setting. 6th grade Language and Literature students are learning about overcoming adversity by analyzing characteristics of famous people who have faced challenges. We are reading different genres and examining a variety of media formats. 7th grade Language and Literature students are simulating what it would be like to move to another country and not be able to speak the language. These emotions and experiences are being connected to the text “Barrio Boy”. Students are also looking at research to help form their own opinions on the most effective ways to learn another language. In the 6th and 7th grade Creative Technology classes the students are creating apps designed specifically for middle school aged kids. The 8th grade students are working with Raspberry Pies and Makey-Makey's to investigate what they are able to create with them! The music department is attending the Florida Music Educator's Conference this week and there are 8 students performing in various music ensembles. Mrs. Baker is also presenting at this state conference. In class, students are working towards getting ready for solo and ensemble, all county ensembles as well as working on music performance assessment competitions. There are 15 students participating in the all-county chorus and 22 students in the all-county orchestra. Please join us on January 24th for the all-county chorus concert at Florida Southern or on February 5 for the all-county orchestra concert. In Mr. Colon: Just finished the "Las partes del cuerpo" and how they celebrate the holidays in Mexico. Now we entering in "La Ropa" (Clothes). We are also doing presentations - the students picked a country (Spanish speaking) and created a PP presentation in how their country celebrate the holidays. We are about to start reading a Spanish article about the importance in uniforms in school. (uniforms - clothes) Students participating in Odyssey of the Mind are getting closer to our competition date of March 2. They have engineered ride on vehicles, built weight-bearing balsa wood structures, recreated works of Leonardo DaVinci, and written hilarious skits! The Environmental Symposium classes are researching and creating solutions to Recycle to Rebuild the infrastructure in our country. Also, shout out to the Mana-team for winning the first round of the Lexus Eco Challenge-Land and Water! On to the final challenge! Visual Arts 3D classes created corregated cardboard relief designs using mixed media. Mrs. Castillo's Spanish I - We started the novel "Agentes Secretos y el Mural de Picasso". We are learning about Spain and the Spanish Civil War, Francisco Franco and fascism. Spanish II - we started the novel "La Vampirata" The main character in the story and her family ran away from Spain during the Spanish Inquisition to Rhode Island because they are Jewish. Students are learning the implications of having to move to another country, change religions, and pretend to be someone who you are not. That is what many people had to do during the Spanish Inquisition simply because of their religious beliefs. Barnett: In Spanish 1, we are writing our goals for the year. Patient: 6th grade students in Mrs. Patient a Spanish class are reading the book El capibara con botas.Reading books in the target language enable students to acquire Spanish Language easily and effectively in a brief period of time.
